Aluminium or polycarbonate luggage: which should you choose?

Aluminium or polycarbonate? The better choice depends on how you travel. Both materials can make a good suitcase, but they differ in weight, how they respond to knocks and how they look after years on the move. Here are the points worth comparing.

Weight makes a practical difference

At similar dimensions, a polycarbonate case is generally lighter than an aluminium one. If you often travel with a strict cabin weight allowance, that difference matters. Check the actual weight of the model and the rules for your ticket; allowances vary by airline and fare.

Knocks and signs of use

Polycarbonate can flex on impact and spring back within the limits of its design. Aluminium may retain a scratch or small dent. Some travellers enjoy that patina; others prefer a shell that keeps a more uniform appearance. Neither material makes a case indestructible. Corners, wheels and handles matter as much as the shell.

Look beyond the shell

Compare the closing system as well. Some cases use a zip; others use a frame and combination locks. In either case, look at how well the parts are fitted and what the particular model actually promises. A lock is no substitute for keeping your passport, documents and valuables with you.

Care and repairability

An aluminium shell can usually be cleaned with a soft cloth and mild soap. Polycarbonate also needs care suited to its finish. Before buying, ask whether high-wear parts such as wheels and handles can be replaced, and read the warranty terms. A commercial warranty covers the faults set out in those terms; it does not promise a case without signs of use.

Which one suits you?

  • Choose polycarbonate if low weight is your main priority and you prefer a shell with some flexibility.
  • Choose aluminium if you want a rigid structure, a frame closure and an appearance that wears its journeys visibly.

The right answer is the case that suits your routes and baggage limits. Compare dimensions, weight, replaceable parts and the service terms for the exact models you are considering.
